Press Release
20th March 2007
99% of people opposed to council privitisation plans
A poll to be presented to council bodies has shown a staggering level of opposition to the Labour-led council's decision to force through proposals to privatise the home care service in Carmarthenshire. The poll conducted by Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM and Adam Price MP, in conjunction with post offices throughout the county, is to be sent to Bruce McLernon as Director of Social Services at Carmarthenshire County Council and Cllr. Kevin Madge as Executive board member with responsibility for this issue. The Plaid AM and MP has challenged the council to rethink their plans following the intensity of the polls findings.
Mr Thomas said:
"We were aware of the strong opposition to these plans but the level of opposition has never been clearer. We will be sending the results of this poll in support of the petition and campaign being run by the Unions and care staff. It is important that Bruce McLernon and Kevin Madge as those with responsibility in this matter are left in no uncertain terms the impact privatising the home care services will have on our local communities."
Mr Price added:
"I am delighted with the support the care staff have received through this poll, and the petition they are running. We are still receiving some signatures in the post as people are very eager to demonstrate their opposition to the plans. This is all leading to the demonstrations that the Unions and care staff will be holding over the coming month that Rhodri and I will be backing 100%"
