Neurosurgery switch puts Mid and West Wales patients at risk

Plaid's politicians have spoken out against the proposals to move neurosurgery from Swansea to Cardiff at a Plaid nominated debate at the National Assembly of Wales. Carmarthen East and Dinefwr AM, Rhodri Glyn Thomas, was adamant that the welfare of his constituents would be put at risk with the transfer of this facility to Cardiff.

Mr Thomas said:

"I made my view very clear at the debate. The argument is about the need for patients to reach emergency treatments within the necessary time target. My constituents in Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, whose rights it is my prime responsibility to defend and safeguard, have a right to first-class provision at a distance that can be reached within the target time. My constituents will be unable to reach Cardiff within that timescale, which is why the Swansea service is so important."

Mid and West Regional Candidate Nerys Evans added:

"Once again, it is up to us as the main opposition party in the Assembly to use our minority party debate time to put this important issue on the political agenda. We are disappointed that the other parties in the Assembly don't share our concerns, and are supporting New Labour's urban agenda that will severely affect communities across rural Wales."
