Plaid calls for more help to single parent families

Widows suffer financial hardship as a result unfair payments system

Plaid Cymru elected members are calling for more to be done to help single parents and widows after a number of constituents have complained about a system that is costing them to work. Adam Price and Rhodri Glyn Thomas are calling on the Government to act on their continual claims to be concerned with single parent families.

Mr Thomas said:

"If someone receives a Widows family allowance it is classed as a second income and puts that person into a higher tax bracket. By working whilst receiving a widow's pension my constituents forgo the option of receiving a tax free widow's allowance, free council tax and a host of other amenities. If they give up the Widows allowance then they will not be entitled to a Widows pension."

Mr Price added:

"The current system is discriminating against those people who actually wish to work. It is making it financially very difficult for someone who is able to work to do so without suffering financially. I have written to the Secretary of State for Works and Pensions asking him to clarify this issue."
