Plaid Cymru speaks out in support of farmers

Plaid Cymru's Assembly Member for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr has backed the views of angry farmers opposed to the Labour Governments plans to scrap a long-established scheme that helps them farm in the hills and uplands. Rhodri Glyn Thomas said the Tir y Mynydd scheme, which has been operating within Wales since the Second World War, was essential to farming in Wales.

Mr Thomas commented:

"This scheme has been in existence for 60 years and the proposals to scrap it would not only hit farmers but rural economies throughout Wales. As recently as 2000 the Welsh Assembly Government supported the scheme so I am somewhat bewildered that they should make such a U-turn on the issue."

"The Labour Government has increasingly distanced themselves from the needs of the Welsh economy and that has never been as evident as with these proposals."
