Plaid Cymru calls for council inquiry
Plaid Cymru's elected members for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr have voiced their support for an inquiry into the way Carmarthenshire county council appointed a new director of education and children's services. Adam Price MP and Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM has called for an inquiry, after it emerged the council had not insisted that the new director should be a Welsh speaker.
Mr Thomas said,
"In the county with the highest number of Welsh speakers in Wales, I find it surprising that Carmarthen county council did not see it necessary to insist on a Welsh speaker to represent all elements of the community."
Mr Price added,
"I would have imagined that Carmarthen county council would have insisted that the new director would be able to relate to all members of the community, both Welsh speakers and non-Welsh speakers. I believe that an inquiry should be conducted into the reasoning behind its failure to comply with its own Welsh language strategy."
