Plaid slam Labour for attacks on most vulnerable

Following announcements by the Labour – Independent run County Council to stop funding day clubs and pushing closure of care homes in the county, Plaid Cymru’s Rhodri Glyn Thomas, who is seeking re-election in the Carmarthen East & Dinefwr constituency, has hit out at the Labour party in Carmarthenshire for scrapping half price rail travel for pensioners and others with certain disabilities.

Rhodri Glyn Thomas said:

“One week its the proposed closure of care homes; the next week its the removal of funding for day clubs; this week its the scrapping of half price rail travel for pensioners.  At what point will the Labour-supported attacks on the most vulnerable in our society end?

“The Labour party claims to be standing up for Wales against Tory cuts.  However the past few weeks have shown beyond doubt it is the Labour party we need protecting from.

“Along with their Independent colleagues, the Labour party in Carmarthenshire is wholly responsible for where cuts are made in our local services.  It is nothing short of scandalous that the Labour party is concentrating cuts on the most vulnerable.

“For many older people in the county, rail travel is the only way in which they can get about.  Recognising the importance, Plaid’s Ieuan Wyn Jones, Minister for Transport in the Welsh Government, has continued to provide concessionary fares on rail travel.  It is disappointing indeed that our County Council has decided to take a contrasted position.

“The Labour party’s Older People’s Champion should be defending our pensioners instead of grinding the axe and placing the burden of cuts on their shoulders”
