Plaid Concern at Police Force cuts
Following the announcement of the UK Government’s Comprehensive Spending Review, local politician Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM has expressed concern for crime prevention and detection in Carmarthenshire as police forces are left to face annual spending cuts of 4% for the next four years. Early predictions by Dyfed-Powys police suggest the need to reduce the annual budget by £8million by 2014-2015, with almost three quarters of savings having to be achieved by 2012-13.
Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM said:
“The savings required are substantial, with almost three quarters of the sum needing to be found within just two years. The police force is one of the largest employers in Carmarthenshire, and I trust the force to save as much money as possible from potential waste to reduce the number of inevitable job losses. I am sure that people employed by Dyfed Powys Police will be concerned for their futures as a result of these cuts with many more also concerned about how this will impact on crime in the county. Jonathan and I will be looking to support Dyfed Powys Police in getting through these cuts whilst maintaining the excellent service they have always offered our communities.
“It appears that between proposing to close county courts and now these cuts to the police Conservative and Lib Dems MPs seriously want to cut back on crime detection, prevention and punishment.”
