Local politican welcomes Carmarthenshire Castle’s top 6 placing

Plaid Cymru Assembly Member Rhodri Glyn Thomas has welcomed Carreg Cennen and Llansteffan Castles fourth and sixth place respectively in the BBC Countryfile Magazine’s search for Britain’s most romantic ruin.

The Plaid Cymru politician was the first to promote this competition locally when he urged residents to vote for the county’s castles in November 2010.

In what proved to be a close-run poll, the coastal ruin of Whittey Abbey in Yorkshire took first place ahead of Fountain Abbey, also in Yorkshire, and Corfe Castle in Dorset which took second and third place.

Former Minister for Heritage and local Assembly Member Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM said:

“It was fantastic to see that the only two castles from Wales to make it into the top ten short list were both in Carmarthenshire, but it’s even better to see the county’s spectacular castles taking fourth and sixth place.

“Almost 2,500 people took part in the competition and undoubtedly recognised the splendour of our castles.

“This is an ideal opportunity to extend the work done by the Welsh Government to promote our heritage in Wales and so see a much needed increase in tourism in Carmarthenshire”.
