Local AM elected Commissioner in the National Assembly

Local Assembly Member, Rhodri Glyn Thomas, who is serving his fourth term as the Plaid Cymru AM for Carmarthen East & Dinefwr has been elected by Assembly Members to serve as a Commissioner on the Assembly Commission.

The Commission is led by the Assembly’s Presiding Officer and has responsibility for the provision of property, staff and services to support the Assembly Members.  The Commission also promotes public awareness of the current or any pending system of devolved government in Wales which is usually carried out by the use of education or information programmes.

The role of the Assembly Commission has increased significance considering that the National Assembly is now a law-making institution.  Plaid’s Rhodri Glyn Thomas is one of four Members nominated by the main political parties and was successfully elected following a motion in yesterday’s Plenary meeting.

Speaking after being chosen by fellow AMs, Rhodri Glyn Thomas said:

“I am very pleased to have been nominated to represent my party on the Assembly Commission in what is the first Commission of our new law-making institution.

“The role of Commissioner is very important to ensure Assembly Members can successfully carry out the scrutiny of legislation and to hold the Welsh Government to account.

“I look forward to working with colleagues to ensure our National Assembly is an efficient and effective Parliamentary institution.”
