Labour/Lib Dem Budget is irresponsible and will cost jobs

Plaid Cymru AM opposes Welsh Government’s spending plans

Plaid Cymru AM Rhodri Glyn Thomas has voted against the Labour Welsh Government’s budget – saying it fails to address the economic challenges ahead and will cost jobs and businesses in Carmarthenshire

Mr. Thomas said that he could not justify voting for a budget that ignores the worsening effects of the economic crisis.  Mr. Thomas pledged to continue to expose Labour’s refusal to act to help jobs and businesses.

Over recent months during the economic crisis, jobs have been threatened in large and small companies alike in Carmarthenshire – yet Labour has refused to act in order to protect jobs and businesses.

Carmarthen East & Dinefwr AM Rhodri Glyn Thomas said:

“I could not support a budget that ignores the worsening effects of this economic crisis in Carmarthenshire and Wales – yet that is what Labour’s budget does.  While there is a growing threat to jobs here as in many areas, Labour is sitting back and letting the people take the hit.

“Plaid has never before opposed a Welsh Budget.  We always seek to get the best possible deal for Wales by negotiating constructively – and that is what we have done this time too, but to no avail.

“The economy has undoubtedly worsened since Plaid Cymru was in government a few months ago and agreed a draft budget with the Labour party.  Labour has refused to react to the challenges facing the Welsh economy and has not prioritised jobs and businesses in this budget.  As a result, we had no choice but to oppose it.

“I and my Plaid Cymru colleagues will continue to push for a full stimulus packages and urgent measures to save jobs, by both the Labour government in Wales and the Conservative/Lib Dem government in Westminster.”
