BBC Survey
There was a lot of talk last week about the ICM survey conducted for the BBC which showed that very few people in Wales knew anything about the work of their National Assembly and that elections were coming up in May. It struck me that this was just as much a criticism of the media in Wales as it was of our work as Assembly Members. The Western Mail’s circulation is below 40,000 compared with the London papers at hundreds of thousands. The number of viewers and listeners to programmes from and about Wales is small and there is very little Welsh presence on the web, other than corporate websites. For the democratic process to work, people have to be involved and feel involved all the time and not just at election time; but where in the media is the space for people to talk about decisions that affect their lives? Local papers are a successful forum for discussing local issues and commercial local radio the same. In Edinburgh they have a talk radio station that gives people the space to phone in and talk about a range of things from sports to politics to the arts and just life in general, not just to fill in between popular music tracks. Isn’t it about time that we had something similar in Wales? We are living in a time when people are talking control of their media but we haven’t got the platform to do this in Wales.
